7 ± 2

Did you know that we can only hold 7±2 pieces of information in our short-term memory?  Yet, in our technology-driven world, we are bombarded with information from all over the place.  We’re also encouraged to “multitask” to be more efficient.  Everything I have ever learned as a psychologist tells me the expectations around managing this level of information flow are unrealistic.  So, don’t feel bad if you feel you can’t handle all the demands on you.  Maybe that’s why we’re now, fortunately,  seeing a movement in the other direction:  mindfulness, slowing down, taking a technology-free vacation, etc.
